Induction with new Games Dev Yr1
First week completed, got through lots of "must do" stuff, but finished off with some fun.The old classic team building task using balloons to build a chair, with cello tape, rubber bands and some cardboard. Worked a treat, with the final quest being that it had to hold a team members weight, with their feet off the floor too. Slight twist this year....lightest member first, then the ultimate challenge.....the heaviest team member. Photos below!

Industry Visit - Double Negative
Most importantly Lewis provided us with 'key information' for 'working in the Games Industry' and how to get into it - what it is to be a 'concept/production artist' - working in a 'production team' what you can earn/time-scales for projects & budgets - what University is like - how to make a successful SHOW-REEL/digital portfolio.
The day ended with Lewis demonstrating scene by scene how elements of the Harry Potter films were constructed, showing this layer by layer.
We have had very positive feedback from both students and staff, and we are really hopeful that we are fortunate enough for Lewis to make this a regular feature of our courses.
Comments from students:-
"The visit from Lewis on Monday was amazingly beneficial to me, it gave me a
good look into the work I am doing and how it relates to the real industry I
was able to see behind the scenes of many different projects and see how
they are made. It also opened my eyes to how hard it may be to get into the
industry which only inspired me to work harder." Steven Games Yr2
"Our lecture with Lewis Guarniere I found very useful. For him to come from a
big Media company from London and visit a small college like ours was a
pleasure as he gave such insight into what the industry is really like, more
than the lectures at Bradford Animation Festival. Some of the useful information he gave us was, how to successfully get into a big company, what working in the industry was really like and what to do and what not to do. As a speaker I found he was very easy to listen to, probably because what he was saying I found interesting but if anyone else were to get the opportunity to speak to Lewis I would highly recommend it." Marcus Games Yr2
"From this event with lewis i have been given a very big insite into the industry like the amount of money i will be making in the first 3 or 4 years (not very much) but it has a very interesting to hear about it from someone that worked his way up from the bottom. He also talked about how he got into the industry which was very interesting because he started as a 'runner' and he explained what a 'runner' does (going from one company to any partner one with information and test renders) then moved up to render supervisor and then to a 'low level modeler' then seven years later he got to 'mid level modeling'. He also talked about the different stages of modeling and all the other more boring stuff that need to be done in order for the end product to be good. He also broke down the different levels of production on films like 'Harry Potter' showing how they went from the 'raw footage' to adding all the CG and and camera effects." Luke Games Yr2

Welcome Back to ALL + ***NEW MUSIC STUDIO ***
As you now all have BLOGS and are 'following' me, + others, I thought this would be a good opportunity to highlight our *** NEW *** Music Studio. This now opens up fantastic opportunities for ALL our students on the MEDIA & GAMES Courses, from Level 1 up to Level 3, initially, then we hope to offer more "Cross College" opportunities across all sectors with an 'on-line radio'...just one idea that we can now explore.
As the Studio is still being finalised this is something we will work towards for offering next year. For the time being everyone is very keen to get everything 'up-n-running' and being really 'hands-on' with all the new kit, specialist recording booth and of course start recording all our buddin' musicians, rappers, singers [and talented staff] too.
Don't forget....Tuesday 12:15 till 1:00ish is the MUSIC CLUB - there has been a lot of interest for this, even more so with the Games Club - Thurs @ 4:30.... so where possible we will be offering additional 'Club Times' hopefully on a lunchtime, but this is dependant on rooms & staffing, so please bear with us till half term to finalise what we can offer.
All we ask is that you respect what we offer and look after all the equipment - a lot of time, energy & thought went into putting this together and we hope to be offering this for some time yet - Enjoy, explore and maybe one day we can be famous hey? :D
